Chasing Dreams is really TOUGH 25 November 2005

As a saying goes “Time waits for no man”, I realised that I have wasted my time for almost 4 years since my last graduation from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Struggling all the way with several part-time jobs till February 2004 when I found my real love..

My real love and happiness lie with my job of teaching music and sign language. From there, I have been trying to get something out – maybe building a career in this area of education.

So it came to my mind – to find work outside Singapore. This may be the best solution for me and it will help explore things further and even, it will help overcome my shortcomings.

Therefore, I decided to give myself 2 years’ time to do something about this goal. Hope I can achieve this on time.

Right now, I’m facing many problems… Where to find money? Where to find information on living/working outside Singapore? Where to find that marimba that I can practise on my techniques? Where to get an instructor to help me overcome my shortcomings in my percussion – aural and drumming? There are lots of questions in my mind. However, I couldn’t help worrying..

I have taken a few steps… Made an appointment with Very Special Arts – to register myself as a performing artiste. Emailed to Mr. Damien about joining percussion ensemble and having percussion lessons. Gone to the library to borrow some books on music and sign language. Worked several shifts at the deaf kfc. Applied for tutoring assignments online. There are lots of things to do. However, it is never ending..

Ignorance is the Best 25 November 2005

I know alot of problems at deaf kfc but I wish I could stay ignorant. Well, life goes on. True enough, it is a very harsh reality that everyone has to go through.

Over there at the deaf kfc, I could not side with everyone. Those who knew they made mistakes knew it the better. Some of them couldn’t take it to their heart.
Outsiders can see the whole picture best. I think I’m the one of the “outsiders” as Donna and Alfred told me everything. However, there is no point for me to clarify things as things are very tensed!

And I feel sorry for Ain who is now helpless at this moment. Yes, she made her mistake – she didn’t clarify things properly. Although she’s quite slow in her thinking and she couldn’t express her thoughts properly, I could see that she is very hardworking at the deaf kfc. Everyone dislikes her so much that they wish to kick her out of that place. Even, they wanna get her out of their sight..
To me, she’s harmless and she needs to make ends meet. Of course, everyone also needs to make ends meet. But still, there’s no use ‘attacking’ her since she’s slow – perhaps, she may be autistic.

I understand how Alfred is feeling. After all, I feel he is in wrong. Yes, I was very aware that he was defending Ain in the first place. Suddenly, she ‘twisted’ her tale to break his trust. And, this led him to have more conflicts with his superior whom he feels he couldn’t work with. What can he do??
If I put myself in his shoes, I will resign this job. Since I’m unhappy with this job, I have to do something about my life – maybe to look for a better one.

Your Career Type: Artistic

You are expressive, original, and independent.
Your talents lie in your artistic abilities: creative writing, drama, crafts, music, or art.

You would make an excellent:

Actor – Art Teacher – Book Editor
Clothes Designer – Comedian – Composer
Dancer – DJ – Graphic Designer
Illustrator – Musician – Sculptor

The worst career options for your are conventional careers, like bank teller or secretary.

What’s Your Ideal Career?

The Keys to Your Heart

You are attracted to those who are unbridled, untrammeled, and free.

In love, you feel the most alive when your lover is creative and never lets you feel bored.

You’d like to your lover to think you are flexible and ready for anything!

You would be forced to break up with someone who was ruthless, cold-blooded, and sarcastic.

Your ideal relationship is open. Both of you can talk about everything… no secrets.

Your risk of cheating is zero. You care about society and morality. You would never break a commitment.

You think of marriage as something that will confine you. You are afraid of marriage.

In this moment, you think of love as something you don’t need. You just feel like flirting around and playing right now.

What Are The Keys To Your Heart?

Got the email from my friend.. This is really SHIOK! So, I decided to share this with you.

What is WFD?
WFD – World Federation of the Deaf.

The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) is an international non-governmental organisation representing approximately 70 million Deaf people worldwide. It is estimated that more than 80 percent of these 70 million live in developing countries, where authorities are rarely familiar with their needs or desires. Recognised by the United Nations (UN) as their spokes-organisation, WFD works closely with the UN and its various agencies in promoting the human rights of Deaf people in accordance with the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other general acts and recommendations of the UN and its specialised agencies. When necessary, WFD uses special, legal or administrative measures to ensure that Deaf people in every country have the right to preserve their own sign languages, organisations, and cultural and other activities. Most important among WFD priorities are Deaf people in developing countries; the right to sign language; and equal opportunity in all spheres of life, including access to education and information.

Alright, I once attended the WFD Youth Camp in Brisbane in 1999, together with Alfred, Gophi and Jasmine. We was in the second batch, representating Singapore. The previous one – Jarn May and her mates. The third one – Andre only. To us, it was really a GREAT eye-opener and it has exposed us to other views of the Deaf Community from various countries.

Oh yes, I almost forgot one more thing that I needed to share this with you.. Here it goes: WFD Spain 2007 Advertisement in International Sign Language. Released early. Do check it out, it’s really COOL!! SHIOK!!!

This movie is about 9.5MB to get download it in a longer time. For broadband users, it takes about 5 mins or less. Download this clip and enjoy watching…

Two Views of Deafness 15 November 2005

Came across that webpage, so I decided to share this with you all.

1ST View: DEAFNESS AS PATHOLOGY
With this perspective, a person might:

  • Define deafness as a pathological condition (a defect, or a handicap) which distinguishes abnormal deaf persons from normal hearing persons.
  • Deny, downplay, or hide evidence of deafness.
  • Seek a “cure” for deafness: focus on ameliorating the effects of the “auditory disability” or “impairment”.
  • Give much attention to the use of hearing aids and other devices that enhance auditory perception and/or focus on speech. Examples: amplifiers, tactile and computer-aided speech devices, cue systems…
  • Promote the use of auditory-based communication modes; frown upon the use of modes which are primarily visual.
  • Describe sign language as inferior to spoken language.
  • View spoken language as the most natural language for all persons, including the deaf.
  • Make mastery of spoken language a central educational aim.
  • Support socialization of deaf persons with hearing persons. Frown upon deaf/deaf interaction and deaf/deaf marriages.
  • Regard “the normal hearing person” as the best role model.
  • Regard professional involvement with the deaf as “helping the deaf” to “overcome their handicap” and to “live in the hearing world”.
  • Neither accept nor support a separate “”deaf culture”.

  • 2ND View: DEAFNESS AS A DIFFERENCE
With this perspective, a person might:

  • Define deafness as merely a difference, a characteristic which distinguishes normal deaf persons from normal hearing persons. Recognize that deaf people are a linguistic and cultural minority.
  • Openly acknowledge deafness.
  • Emphasize the abilities of deaf persons.
  • Give much attention to issues of communication access for deaf persons through visual devices and services. Examples: telecommunication devices, captioning devices, light signal devices, interpreters…
  • Place much emphasis on speech and speechreading (“oral skills”); avoid sign and other communication methods which are deemed “inferior”.
  • Encourage the development of all communication modes including – but not limited to – speech.
  • Strongly emphasize the use of vision as a positive, efficient alternative to the auditory channel.
  • View sign language as equal to spoken language.
  • View sign language as the most natural language for the deaf.
  • In education, focus on subject matter, rather than a method of communication. Work to expand all communication skills.
  • Support socialization within the deaf community as well as within the larger community.
  • Regard successful deaf adults as positive role models for deaf children.
  • Regard professional involvement with the deaf as “working with the deaf” to “provide access to the same rights and privileges that hearing people enjoy”.
  • Respect, value and support the language and culture of deaf people.
